Next week I'll start hearing yeses... and nos...
|
Hi Reader, And next week I'll start hearing about who they've selected. I'd be a bit naive to assume I'm going to be chosen. I know that sounds a bit negative, but hear me out. Applying for grants and reputable gallery spaces is competitive. There are a lot of artists out there with good ideas. Just like mine. And I have ZERO clue what jurors are seeing across applications. Maybe last year they already had an exhibition around caregiving. Or absurdity. Or roles of power. Maybe another artist's work personally resonates more with the jurors. It's not always about my art. I used to think every no was an assessment of my skill and value as an artist. Like each rejection was another nail in the coffin for my creativity. Now I don't believe it's entirely about my skill. Or even my ideas. It's about timing. The people reviewing the applications. The other applicants. And so much more. Don't get me wrong. I'm going to be disappointed with every no I receive. And I'm going to give myself time to feel that disappointment. But I already have two more exhibition opportunities to apply for... so I'm going to keep going. Don't let the nos in your life become proof you should stop making art. Let them become stepping stones that grow your confidence and faith in your art. Remember: proudly call yourself an artist. Together we are Artist Strong. Carrie
