Moving beyond tracing: how to grow as an artist

Hi Reader,

One of the most common things I hear from students in From Reference to Real is that they are:

“desperate to move beyond copying and tracing.”

They want to make artwork that feels like their own, but they're not always sure how to get there.

Here's what I want you to know: you don't have to give up photo references, and you don't have to master every skill before you start making original art.

But you might have to get comfortable with something else…

In my new YouTube video, I'm sharing four steps to help you move beyond copying and tracing, identify the skills you actually need, and start experimenting with your art.

>>>Watch the new video/read it here<<<

I also talk about why I want you to think of your next five or ten artworks as experiments, rather than finished pieces that need to be exhibition-worthy.

You might discover something you love. You might make work you don't like. You might learn something that changes how you approach the next piece entirely.

That's all part of the process.

You don't need to have everything figured out before you begin.

Remember: proudly call yourself an artist.

Together we are Artist Strong.

P.S. Tracing is NOT cheating. Nor do you have to stop doing it. Here’s why.
